Brynhild

Brynhild
   , Brunhild
In the Volsung Cycle a Valkyrie who is awakened from a charmed sleep by Sigurd, to whom she becomes betrothed. Later, Sigurd, having lost his memory, impersonates Gunnar to enable him to win Brynhild. To do this he rides through a wall of flame (initiation ceremony), as in the case of Menglad and Skirnir. When Brynhild discovers the treachery of which she has been the victim, she turns against Sigurd, and has him killed and then takes her own life.
In the Thidrek Saga, her betrothed Siegfried marries Grimhild, for reasons of policy. The rest of the story is similar to the above.
In the Nibelungenlied she is a queen of Iceland, who can only be wed by one who could defeat her in three trials of strength. Siegfried, her betrothed, wearing the Tarnkappe, the helmet of invisibility, defeats her, thus enabling Gunther to wed her. Because of this she has Siegfried murdered by Hagen.
